A superscore combines your highest section scores from different SAT test dates.

Simple formula
SAT superscore = highest Reading & Writing score + highest Math score across the test dates a college considers.
Different from one sitting
Your superscore can be higher than any single SAT total because the two section scores may come from different attempts.
Policy matters

College Board Score Choice lets students choose SAT scores by test date, but some colleges and scholarships require all scores.
Official reports
If a school requires official scores, send the test dates that support the superscore it asks for. Individual SAT sections cannot be sent separately through College Board.
Self-reporting
Many applications let you self-report your highest section scores first, then verify later with official score reports if admitted or enrolled.

Important limitations

A calculator can organize your scores, but admission offices control how those scores are used.

Not every college superscores
Some schools use the highest single sitting or ask for every SAT score. Treat the result as planning guidance until you confirm the college policy.
Score Choice is by test date
College Board Score Choice lets you select test dates, not individual RW or Math sections. A college that superscores may still need the full test-date reports that contain those sections.
Practice tests are estimates
If you enter Bluebook or practice-test scores, use the result for planning only. Official SAT scores should come from your College Board score report.

How do I calculate my SAT superscore?

Find your highest Reading & Writing score from all eligible SAT dates, find your highest Math score from all eligible SAT dates, then add those two section scores together. For example, 730 RW plus 740 Math equals a 1470 superscore.

Is SAT superscore the same as Score Choice?

No. Superscore is the way a college combines your highest section scores. Score Choice is the College Board score-sending option that lets you choose which full SAT test dates to send. A college can allow one, both, or neither.

Can I send only my best Math or only my best Reading & Writing section?

No. College Board score sending works by SAT test date. If a college superscores, it usually receives the full test-date reports and then evaluates the highest sections according to its policy.

Should I retake the SAT if my superscore is close to my target?

If one section is clearly below your goal and your target colleges superscore, a retake can make sense because you can focus preparation on that section. If your best single score and superscore are already within a college middle 50% range, the retake value may be lower.

Do all colleges accept SAT superscores?

No. Many colleges superscore SAT results, but policies vary by school and can change. Check the admission testing page for every college on your list before deciding which scores to send.

Can a superscore be higher than every single SAT test date?

Yes. If your best Reading and Writing score came from one date and your best Math score came from another, the superscore can exceed each single-test total.

Should I calculate superscore before deciding on another SAT retake?

Yes. Compare your superscore, best single sitting, and target-college middle 50% range. If only one section is holding down the superscore, a focused retake may be more efficient.
